Pompadour

“You’re going to get a toupee”? There was only one man in Pecos way back then who had a toupee and I had not been impressed. I knew why Roy wanted one. He began going bald at the age of nineteen. He was a handsome young man and hated the fact he was going to be bald on the top.

His appointment was in Odessa and he left a balding young man but returned with a very full pompadour style wig. I was in a mild state of shock but our little girls fell to the floor laughing and pointing at him. He was so disappointed because it was quite obvious he thought he looked like Elvis Presley. I really had to be careful but suggested that if I helped him comb it down a bit it might be better. It was, well just a little, but it still looked like a toupee.

Our girls about the ages of four and six left the house and gathered up all their friends to come see their silly daddy. For days we had children looking through the storm door saying, “Mr. Prewit, we like your new hair. He beamed! Honestly, he thought he was gorgeous.

He told me that it was put on with glue and wig tape and would not fall off. He could bathe in it, sleep in it, and take it off once a week to wash it. The first night he got frisky and I think it was to see if the damned thing would stay put. It did. Well, until sometime during the night it came unglued and when we awoke it was glued partially to the top of his head and partially under my armpit. Houston, we have a problem!

His first remark was, “It hurts”, and my response was, “You think that is painful!” “What do you think my arm pit is feeling”. It could only be removed with rubbing alcohol and that was in the bathroom. So, he got to his knees and with my armpit attached we cripple into the bathroom. Thank God the children were still asleep or they might have gone out and rounded up the neighborhood children to come see silly, naked, mommy and daddy.

The bathroom was so tiny so we lay down in the hallway. We talked about the next plan of action and decided if I poured rubbing alcohol down my shoulder it would run under my armpit and free us. After awhile it did work. From then on, he removed it and placed it on the wig stand.

That was the first of so many toupee stories. All include either him losing it or getting it hung somewhere. Life with Roy was always interesting; never boring, but always interesting.

Monster High & Shopkins

I was a cake decorator for 25 years. I retired myself from it a few years ago, but my

daughter-in-law and son asked me to make birthday cakes for my granddaughters.

Aubree’s birthday was July 2nd, she turned 8, and wanted Monster High for her

birthday cake, and Alyssa’s birthday is coming up on August 8, she’ll be 4, and

she wants Shopkins. When your kids put your grandkids on the phone to ask you

to make their cake, it’s impossible to say no 🙂 Aubree sent me this picture of the

cake she wanted.

This is the picture my daughter-in-law sent me for Alyssa’s cake.

We decided we would use the little Shopkins characters Alyssa already

has since none of the stores in my town have them.

Aubree & Alyssa wanted their cakes to be different colors on the inside,

and strawberry flavored.

So I whipped up 2 boxes of Betty Crocker Strawberry Cake Mix, and made

some different colors using icing  paste colors. I baked one 10 inch round cake

for Aubree’s Monster High cake, and two 8 inch round layers for Alyssa’s

Shopkins cake. I made them a few days early and wrapped them up and

put them in the refrigerator. The cake is moister when I either freeze the layers,

or refrigerate them for a couple days. I don’t care for the store-bought fondant,

so I learned to make my own with marshmallows years ago.

I made the Candy Clay for the skull with Almond  Bark & Corn Syrup. The recipe is in Wilton’s Yearbook.

I found a picture of the skull online and printed it out to make a pattern.

I laminated the picture and cut it out. I worked on a cutting board so when

I needed to move the skull, it wouldn’t bend. I didn’t take pictures as I

went because my fingers were greasy 🙂 Here’s what I ended up with.

I had some shimmery edible dusting powder, how convenient was that!

It really made the difference. I had white and pink, so perfect!

I didn’t have any black icing paste color and I really didn’t feel like

getting dressed, going to the store, and buying a complete set of

paste colors when all I needed was black, so, I used glittery black

piping gel instead.

I rolled pink candy clay between my fingers and it looked kind of like boney knuckles

and I thought “Cool border for the Skull Cake!”

For the Shopkins Logo, I also printed it off the internet and laminated it.

I needed to make some little flowers for the Shopkins cake so I colored

some of the fondant I had set aside. I used a little fondant flower cutter dipped in

powdered sugar, so it wouldn’t stick, to make purple, yellow and blue flowers.

I covered the two layer cake with the pink fondant, and spread it

out to cover the plate too.

The party is tomorrow so I don’t have the characters on the cake yet

but I’ll add a picture later with all the little guys on it 🙂

A Cowboy’s Conversation with God.

11403113_1600993146822053_2666230595436346292_n

Cowboy: Lord, thank You for blessing our nation with freedom.
God: Freedom is not a blessing to everyone, son.
Cowboy: Why, Lord?
God: Because some use their God-given freedom selfishly, and even refuse to be thankful.
Cowboy: Why do you continue to give them freedom then?
God: Because as long as there is a heartbeat, there is hope they will change.
Cowboy: What can I do, Lord?
God: Remember that real freedom is not about doing what you want, but about doing what you should, with My Spirit’s help. Let that kind of freedom shine through you.
Cowboy: With Your help, Lord, I will.

“For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom…” (2 Cor. 3:17)

TODAY

What’s on my mind? Facebook always asks. Today my mind is on Thankfulness, Gratefulness, Relief, Praising God for His Goodness….
Many of my friends know that my grandson, my heart, was born with a DiGeorge Syndrome. From Congestive Heart Failure in 2001 to a Kidney Stone this March, “everybody’s baby” has been through a lot. 8 hospitalizations in 14 years from Open Heart Surgery to Pneumonia to Pharyngeal Flap. 3 Broken Bones, Multiple Dental Surgeries and various other illnesses and injuries have been a real trial sometimes.
One particular issue has been ongoing since his teeth broke through his gums.
Dental issues are a big problem for most DiGeorge patients and our little guy has been no exception. Decay, erosion, and chipping has developed into a serious problem, but the biggest problem, I found out, was finding a dentist willing to tackle a case like this. Today we met him. Dr. Zachary Ellis. My relief, when he didn’t turn us away and say there was nothing he could do for us, was profound indeed. Salty drops ran down my cheeks despite my severe warning that they stay hidden. It took a dedicated case manager to two months to locate a dentist with the skills and willingness to take on this extreme case. We’d been turned away and left discouraged so much I feared there would be no enamel left to work on before we got help. I am so grateful to case manager, Natasha with MCNA, for not giving up, for staying in contact, for searching endlessly and following up with me. I am so thankful to God for this child, for the joy he brings, the messes he makes, the music he drives us crazy with, the never ending questions about anything and everything, the movies he makes me watch with him, the teenage attitude he exudes, and the love he bestows on us. For the way he reaches for my hand when he talks to me or wants me to come so he can show me the WWE’s latest high-jinks. The backwards hugs and how he plays with his dog Peanut like two kids. Momma, Nana & Papa love him so much & the feeling is mutual<320150227_054001 20150227_054125 20150227_054654 20150227_055315 IMG_91158944074094
